In Sikhism, a shabad is a sacred song selected from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the everlasting Guru of the Sikhs. The shabads or hymns of Sri Guru Granth Sahib are known as Gurbani or the Guru’s word and are written in the Gurmukhi script and composed in raag, a musical score. Jagroop Kaur, “The Concept of Peace and the Guru Granth Sahib” 66(3) Ind J Pol Sc 649 (2005). He has stressed that avoiding meat alone will not lead one to the achievement of spiritual bliss. However, a deeper study of the whole hymn shows that the Guru Granth Sahib is addressing a Vaishnav Brahmin who believes that he can achieve his spiritual goal only by avoiding meat as food and not by trying to obtain the true wisdom through meditation.
They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat.” This is considered by many as the only hymn in the whole of Guru Granth Sahib that is specifically cited in support of eating meat. O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said. They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about meditation or spiritual wisdom. Those who renounce meat, and hold their noses when sitting near it, devour men at night. What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? What leads to sin? It was the habit of the gods to kill the rhinoceros, and make a feast of the burnt offering. He goes on to say, “The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about meditation and spiritual wisdom. On page 1289, Guru Nanak says that living beings are formed of air, water and fire and are subject to pleasure and pain. Tell me, brother, what would you call an unrighteous action? You call yourself the most excellent sage then who would you call a butcher?” When your account is called for, your face and mouth shall be beaten.” On page 1103, Kabir says, “You kill living beings, and call it a righteous action. When the Lord calls for their account, what will their condition be? Kabeer, it is tyranny to use force the Lord shall call you to account. On page 1375, he says, “Kabeer, they oppress living beings and kill them, and call it proper. Who would cut throats to have meat with his bread?”. Further, on page number 1374 he says, “The dinner of beans and rice is excellent when flavoured with salt. Says Kabir, you have missed out on paradise your mind is set on hell.”.

So tell me, what have you killed? And what good are your purifications? Why do you bother to wash your face? And why do you bother to bow your head in the mosque? Your heart is full of hypocrisy what good are your prayers or your pilgrimage to Mecca? You are impure you do not understand the Pure Lord. The light of the soul passes into another form. There is a shabad by Kabir on page 1350 of the Guru Granth Sahib which says, “You say that the One Lord is in all, so why do you kill chickens?… You seize a living creature, and then bring it home and kill its body you have killed only the clay. It breaks itself from all the communal shackles and spreads the message of love, universal brotherhood and peace, applicable to all the religious communities of the whole world.
It evokes the whole world to live in peace and harmony.
It is first inter-faith scripture of the world. In addition to the writings of Sikh Gurus, it contains authentic and well preserved writings of many Saints, Bhakts and Sufis belonging to different faiths, castes, and regions covering the whole of India. Its message of oneness of God and universal brotherhood serves as a model for inculcating communal harmony and world peace. It is a unique document on contemporaneous socio-religious milieu, cultural moorings and ethos. The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, has responded to the issue of amity and peace in a very distinct manner.
